Moreover, one should have a basic idea of how the letters sound and how they interact with the vowels. For example, one should know the 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet and the three short vowels and three long vowels. Besides, the Quran is the holy scripture of Muslims, how is it possible for us not to know how to recite our own scripture correctly? What are the prerequisites of learning Tajweed? Before beginning to learn the Tajweed rules, one must know how to read the Quran in the most basic way. The reward that one receives from reciting the Quran with Tajweed is unimaginable. Is it obligatory for all Muslims to learn Tajweed and recite the Quran correctly? Even though knowing Tajweed is not an obligatory duty of a Muslim, it is highly recommended for them to know Tajweed rules when reciting the Quran. However, courses on melodious recitation of the Quran may be offered in the future. This course does not intend to teach melodious recitation of the Quran. The prerequisite for reciting the Quran melodiously is learning Tajweed. Moreover, there is a difference between reciting the Quran melodiously and with Tajweed. However, Tajweed is more advanced and has many more rules that increasingly beautify one’s recitation. Reading the Quran means knowing the basics of reading the Quran such as the 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet and the three short and long vowels. Tajweed is different from what you may think There is a difference between knowing how to read the Quran and reading the Quran with Tajweed. As a result, the first step to reciting the Quran beautifully is learning all the Tajweed rules and implementing them in one’s recitation. A person who has a good voice but does not have good Tajweed is not a qualified reciter. 49) One of the prerequisites of reciting the Quran with a good voice is mastering the Tajweed rules. Verily, a beautiful voice, adds to the beauty of the Quran. The Noble Prophet, Muhammad (PBUH) has emphasized the importance of reciting the Quran beautifully by saying: Some of these Tajweed rules are the places of articulation of letters, their characteristics, pronouncing letters thickly or thinly, and the rules of nūn sākinah and tanween. ![]() There are certain Tajweed rules that one must learn so that one’s recitation reaches a higher standard. What is Tajweed of the Quran? Tajweed means “making something better or more beautiful.” In the Quranic context, Tajweed is learning the rules of recitation of the Quran so that one’s recitation becomes better, more appealing, fluent, and beautiful. ![]()
